Microsoft Build 2015 – Hololens for Education

It’s great that Microsoft are pushing education as a major stream for Hololens, I would though have probably hoped for a slightly better Build 2015 demo as what was demonstrated, something with location context sensitivity.

But still, good times ahead and I’m looking forward to the day I can try out VOIS with Hololens!

Unity: A simulation/games engine that can produce Film/TV animated work?

For me it’s always been an issue that you can’t really use your real-time simulation/games engine to develop pre-render animation work. But then again they’ve never been made with that in mind.

I remember on a previous project we’d have to model in 3DS Max, then if we were simulating we’d move our designs onto Quest3D, or if we were doing some animation work, we’d use Poser.

Wouldn’t it be great if we could do all that in one tool!

Well the latest incarnation of Unity (v4) is purporting to do just that and it’s creators have produced a really nice piece of pre-render animation to back up their claim. I’ve included it below:

Whilst I don’t think their quite their yet, the sample does show that sometime soon we can have a one stop shop for either TV/Film work as well as simulation/gaming.

Animated cartoon example

I recently produced a quick sample of how one could use cartoon characters as part of my company’s internal courseware delivery. The approach wasn’t used, but I thought I’d provide a link to the sample in case anyone wanted to take a look.

Visualisation: Using AVATAR movie techniques (Part 2)

Since developing my draft scenes in the previous post, I’ve managed to find some time to move onto start modelling some of the main prop items that my final animation will use.

As the animation will feature mountaineers, they obviously need realistic looking kit, so I’ve initially created a boot model with attached crampons along with a Raveltik ice axe.

I’ve included images of them below:

When I have time I’m going to move onto the modelling the mountaineers themselves!

Visualisation: Using AVATAR movie techniques (Part 1)

After creating my first HD quality 3D animation discussed in an earlier post, I decided to make a conscious effort to produce something on a much grander scale.

To do this I’ve started using a product called Vue, which was extensively used to create the Pandora landscapes seen in AVATAR. I’m using the personal learning edition of Vue for the moment (whilst I save up for the full version), but it is fully featured.

As you can see from my draft scene pictures, the storyline is to be based around a mountain climbing movie and in future posts I’ll give an update on how I’m creating the characters.

The Nature Academy – Update

I’ve developed a sample advert for the company I work for, using techniques gained from the course I’m on.

Why not take a look:

The Nature Academy

Have just joined the Nature Academy!

No I’ve not become a naturist, it’s a training course on improving your 3D modelling skills to TV/Film quality level and specifically looks at producing amazing landscapes and natural moving elements such as grass, dust and water.

I hope to upload some of my work at the end of the course for people to see!
